Process
Every project starts with the same dilemma: where on earth to begin.
The spark for Roko was
the Afrodite logo by Herb Lubalin. The tight letter spacing and geo-sans goodness of this style was the temptation to try and draw Nuform in it. It turned out well enough we made it our logo. The reaction to it was positive that a new temptation arised...

Album covers are an endless source of type and visual inspiration. This one by Glenn Yarbrough features a hand drawn hairline geo-sans that frame two nudist in a forest. The type seen here felt compatible to the afrodite logo. These two sources informed the type that was drawn while sketching.

These two examples are offsprings of the source material above. They share similar DNA but the idea was to make a thin and bold version that felt like fraternal twins. The thin weight would be so ultra light its only practical use is when set at a massive display size. The bold would be more practical for a variety of display sizes. The intention was to give the forms just enough personality to make them feel familiar but new.

In the middle of the Roko process I hit a wall. All the letterforms had too much personality. It’s as if every character of the alphabet was trying to hard to impress the letter next to it. Stepping back I needed to recalibrate my work strategy. I looked back through several inspiration folders on my computer than contain a random selection of type examples.
In there I found the Domino by Cardinal. This type was heat stamped onto plastic boxes of dominos.The other example is L and C Hairline, a display typeface made by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase. Each example aided in giving clarity towards the specific letterforms that required having personality.
Feeling optimistic, I turned to a fresh sheet in my sketchbook and began drawing a new series of letterforms based on the examples from above.
